What is a Reflexology Massage?
Reflexology is a type of massage that uses a variation of amounts of pressure to the feet, hands and ears. This is related to an idea that these body parts are connected to certain organs and body systems. It's designed to reduce stress, relieve pain and create a better balance in your body.
Where Did Reflexology Come From?
Reflexology is a type of therapy or massage that dates back to thousands of years ago. Believed to have started in Egypt and China. While it's not a scientifically proven alternative for medical treatment, it is a helpful additional treatment when used in combination with the medication. The modern reflexology treatments that we see today have been around for the last 60 years or so, and research continues today into its effects in helping reduce symptoms for certain conditions!
What Should I Wear For a Reflexology Massage?
You do not need to undress for reflexology massages. A therapist may ask you to remove your shoes and socks, but will not ask you to remove any other items of clothing. We would still advise you to wear looser fitting clothing as it will feel more comfortable for you. If you'd rather wear jeans or something else, that's absolutely fine, whatever you feel comfortable in!
What Happens During a Reflexology Massage?
The masseur may choose to work on one of the three main areas or work on all three depending on the health issues that you're trying to address. Reflexology is a specific technique and it's completely normal for you to ask your masseur any questions you might have before the session, during and after. They will work through the points from the ears to the feet with gentle pressure to allow nerve pathways and congestion to release. It promotes relaxation to the whole body. If your masseuse finds any pain or tightness, they will apply pressure to bring the body back into balance. This type of massage is said to make you feel very light and relaxed as well as warmth from the pressure.
Benefits of Reflexology Massages
There are many benefits to receiving reflexology treatments. People have reported that this type of therapy helped to reduce their stress and anxiety and their pain. It's also known to help lift people's moods and improve their well-being in general. In some cases, this type of reflexology therapy has helped with sinus issues, back problems and digestion problems, to name just a few!
What Happens After a Reflexology Massage?
People typically don't feel pain or aching at all after reflexology treatments as the pressure used during the treatments is quite light. It is recommended that you rest for the remainder of the day that you had the massage done, allowing your body to heal and regain the balance the treatment has aimed to restore. Additionally, you should try to avoid stimulants like coffee, tea and alcohol as they can reduce the level of effectiveness from the massage.
How Often Should You Get Reflexology Massages?
It is suggested to begin with a reflexology session every week for 6 to 8 weeks, and see how you get on. You and your masseur can discuss how the treatment is going and decide when would be best for you to have your next session. It does vary from person to person, and please remember that the reflexology treatments are not cures for health conditions, they help to reduce symptoms and pains caused by certain conditions and diseases.
