What is a Thai Massage?
A Thai massage is a more traditional type of therapy. It's described as being a combination of acupressure and assisted yoga poses. The main difference between a Thai massage and other types of massages is the fact that Thai massages are performed upon a floor mat. The therapist moves all around and above you to access all parts of your body!
What Happens During a Thai Massage?
Your whole body will be worked during a Thai massage. The therapist will use a sequence of movements similar to that of various yoga positions. A firm level of pressure will be administered by your masseur through their fingertips and palms onto your body. They use every part of their bodies, including their knees and elbows and some masseurs will even walk on top of you. The therapist will stretch and twist your body around into various positions to give you a deeper massage. The aim is to increase the range of motion in your joints and muscles, and it should help with your posture also.
Benefits of a Thai Massage
There are lots of known benefits to having a Thai massage, obviously like all massages, they will make you feel relaxed, but they do have their own additional benefits! They are known to help relieve symptoms caused by headaches, as well as reducing the impact of chronic headaches and migraines. It's also an effective remedy for helping to reduce back pain as the therapists often target trigger points, which helps with the pain you're experiencing. After the therapy, your muscles should feel less stiff and sore as well as your joints.
What Happens After a Thai Massage?
Once you've had your Thai massage treatment, it's likely that you'll be feeling quite relaxed. However, it is important to take time to rest as you will have been pulled, stretched and poked at during your session. It's also equally important to make sure you drink plenty of water and keep yourself hydrated as you may feel sleepy as well as relaxed. People who have Thai massages do not tend to suffer from side effects, but it is advised if you have high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease, osteoporosis, neurological diseases or coronary artery disease, to speak with a doctor or medical professional before having this type of massage.
How Often Should I Have a Thai Massage?
It's completely up to you how often you should have a Thai massage. Generally, therapists recommend you should have the treatment about two or three times a month, which will allow your body to experience the maximum benefits from the massage. After you've had your session, it's a good idea to practise yoga and stretching at home to help the treatment last longer. If you have any questions, make sure to ask your therapist and they'll be able to advise you further!
What Should I Wear to a Thai Massage?
Thai massages are a type of massage that are performed while you are fully clothed. It is still advisable for you to wear looser fitting clothing that will allow you to move around more freely and feel comfortable. You'll be moved and stretched into different positions, so it's important that you wear clothing to support this!
